RAJKOT, India: Virat Kohli was unbeaten on 72 as India smashed the West Indies for 364-4 by stumps on day one of the first test on Thursday.
With Kohli was Rishabh Pant, on 17 not out, as India notched its highest total in a day's play against the West Indies.
After tea, Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane added 105 runs for the fourth wicket as India reaped the advantage of perfect batting conditions and a depleted West Indies battery.
The run rate dropped a tad to four an over, as the batsmen searched for rhythm. West Indies, too, improved their lines through the day.
It didn't result in any wickets though as Kohli and Rahane put on 50 off 112 balls and India crossed 300 in the 73rd over.
Kohli reached his 20th test half-century off 100 balls. Overall, he faced 137 balls and hit only four boundaries in what was not the most fluent knock by the world's No. 1 test batsman.
Rahane, too, lacked the ease with which debutant Prithvi Shaw batted earlier in the day. Rahane fell on 41 to Roston Chase in the last hour of play.
