New York: The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) on Saturday called for the lifting of the Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip.

The agency also called for allowing access for its international staff to provide aid to Palestinians and address the catastrophic humanitarian crisis and famine in the enclave.

There is a welcome and rare momentum to reach a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and pave the way for a long-term solution to end the decades-long conflict in the embattled Palestinian enclave, said Commissioner-General of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, posting on X.

Lazzarini pointed out that these developments constitute a glimmer of hope, which rarely allows UNRWA to urgently intervene to address the famine and suffering of over two million people who face extremely tough humanitarian needs.

The Israeli occupation forces have been launching an all-out aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza, which has led to 67,074 fatalities and 169,430 injuries, amid extremely tough humanitarian conditions due to the Israeli blockade imposed on the enclave.
