DOHA: Fourteen Qatari Nurses from Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) are embarking on an innovative training programme called Leadership for Change.
The programme aims to develop the skills of nurses and support them with the knowledge they need to influence policy and health system improvements; develop quality; cost effective models of delivering services in hospital settings; be effective contributors to the broader healthcare team; contribute to ongoing leadership and management development programs for others and influence changes in nursing and other training programmes, a press release issued by the HMC said yesterday.
Qatar is the sixth country in the region to implement this training programme, which was recently launched as a partnership between the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Council of Nurses –Geneva, the Supreme Council of Health, HMC, and the Primary Health Care Corporation.
Asma Mosa, Head Nurse at the Hamad General Hospital’s Trauma Centre is enrolled in the one-year programme. “It’s a great opportunity for self-development and is a driving force towards positive change in the country,” said Mosa. “It helps us to be better equipped with strategic planning and thinking skills, and to build strategic alliances within our organisations, amongst national public and private healthcare institutions, it also enables us to improve our skills by applying what we learn and implementing our projects inside the hospitals.
“This is helping us develop our skills and improve the performance of our units which will have a positive impact on our delivery of patient care,” said Mosa.
Nurses in the program work on project proposals and then implement these projects in their actual work environment. Mosa is currently working with her group on looking at new and innovative ways to approach safety in the workplace.
“The wellbeing of our patients’ is at the heart of everything we do and I’m glad that this program has us thinking about the importance of staff safety in terms of ensuring we are providing the best services in a medical environment,” added Mosa.
