DOHA: The United Nations Special Rapporteur François Crépeau, on a mission here to assess the human rights situation of migrants in the country, begun official meetings yesterday, said a spokesperson.
“He (Crépeau) held meetings with officials today (Sunday) and several other meetings will continue,” a spokesperson told The Peninsula.
Crépeau, UN’s Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants arrived here on Friday, will meet with a range of government officials, representatives of countries sending majority of migrant workers, international organisations, civil society, and also migrants during his eight day visit.
He will also visit a prison and a detention centre, according to a statement issued last week.
This is the first mission to Qatar by an independent expert charged by the UN Human Rights Council with monitoring and reporting on the human rights situation of migrants around the world.
Crépeau, will disclose his preliminary findings at a press conference on November 10 in Doha and present a comprehensive report of the visit to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2014.
