DOHA: Four young engineers from Public Works Authority (Ashghal), visited South Korea as part of off-the-job training and were taken to major construction project sites.
The engineers, who visited the country on October 19-26 interacted with Korean engineers and other professionals at the sites, according to a statement by the South Korean embassy.
The training was organised by the embassy, in partnership with four major Korean construction companies. This is the second time such a programme has been arranged, following the visit of three Qatari engineers last year.
The companies included Hyundai E&C, GS E&C, Daewoo E&C and Samsung C&T.
During the seven-day trip, the engineers visited four road projects, including the Busan-Geoje Fixed Link, the world’s deepest and longest underwater road tunnel being built with immersed tunnel technology. They also visited eight other sites, including the Incheon Metro 2 which is in the final phase of completion.
The visits provided the engineers with understanding and exposure to latest technologies being utilised in the construction sector. They were also briefed on construction techniques in the East and the West.
Korean companies have a huge presence in Qatar, implementing major infrastructure projects,  including Barzan project, New National Museum of Qatar, Lusail Expressway project and several packages of Doha Metro Project.
The embassy and the companies organised the trip as part of their commitment to support capacity-building of Qataris and encourage the development of local talent, especially those involved in the construction field.
The South Korean Ambassador, Chung Keejong, praised the President of Ashghal, Nasser Ali Al Mawlawi, for supporting the initiative and said such programmes can help enhance cooperation in the construction sector.
