Nur-Sultan: The Kazakh Ministry of Interior announced the arrest of more than 200 people and the injury of dozens of its members during protests against the rise in gas prices in several cities in Kazakhstan.
In a statement, the Ministry of the Interior stated that 95 policemen were injured, and 37 Kazakh security cars were damaged in the city of Almaty.
The arrests included many citizens due to violence against government officials, riots and attacks on government buildings, the Ministry said, adding that the police took the measures stipulated by law to ensure the safety and tranquility of residents.
Earlier, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree dismissing the government and appointing First Deputy Prime Minister Alikhan Ismailov as acting prime minister after days of protests against rising gas prices. Tokayev also declared a state of emergency in Almaty from 5 -19 January.
