DOHA: Qatar’s population went up more than 10 percent in 2014, driven mostly by massive spending on development projects for which tens of thousands of fresh foreign workers came into the country.
The population rose by a huge 190,000 last year, which represented a growth of 10.1 percent over 2013.
A Qatar National Bank (QNB) monthly monitor report said the population growth reflected the large influx of expatriate workers filling the 120,000 new jobs created in Qatar each year.
The growth in 2014 was the highest after 2010 when the population jumped by more than 11 percent.
However, a look at latest population figures released by the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics suggests the population peaked until November last year.
In December it went down by 34,000 to over 2.23 million. There was a further decline of 11,000 in the population in January 2015 to a little over 2.22 million.
