NEW DELHI: A school bus collided with a truck laden with bricks in rural northwestern India last morning, killing at least eleven children, police said. Seven died at the scene of the accident in Jaheer village in the state of Punjab, with a further four succumbing to their injuries in hospital, PTI reported, citing a local official. Nearly 30 children were travelling in the bus, local senior police officer Rajinder Singh told the agency. About 110,000 people were killed in Indian road accidents in 2011 — more than 300 every day — according to the National Crime Records Bureau. Bad roads, speeding vehicles and poor driving were among the contributing factors. In neighbouring Nepal, also known for its treacherous roads, at least 15 people were killed and 25 injured when a bus carrying passengers returning from a wedding veered off a narrow mountain road. The vehicle tumbled 250 metres down a steep hill on Sunday evening after the driver lost control, Sthaneswar Regmi, district superintendent of police in central Palpa district, said. He said that both the bride and the groom were injured but their lives were not threatened.
Woman killed for spitting in Delhi
New Delhi: A 70-year-old woman was killed by a man on whom she accidentally spat, a police official said yesterday. The incident was reported from a vegetable market in east Delhi’s Kalyanpuri area around 9pm on Sunday. The victim, identified as Munni Devi, was killed by a man identified as Arjun, 30, on whom she had accidentally spat. “Arjun got enraged and had a heated argument with the elderly woman before slashing her neck with a sharp-edged weapon. He was arrested and booked in a murder case,” the officer said.
IT industry targets $300bn in 7 years
Bangalore: Targetting $300bn revenue from IT sector by 2020, the industry representative body Nasscom yesterday announced expansion of its focus to include internet, mobile technology and cloud computing. Currently revenue from software and services is around $100bn. The larger focus for Nasscom, from just software and services, has been suggested by a panel the industry body had set July last year under the chairmanship of Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy. Murthy said internet, mobile technology, cloud computing and domestic IT market had great potential.
