DOHA: Plans are afoot to convert all roundabouts on the Corniche Road, except the one near Sheraton Doha, into traffic intersections.
The project aims to ease the heavy traffic on the entire stretch of the road during peak hours on weekdays as also on weekends.
The small intersection linking the Corniche with Souq Waqif will be expanded as part of the project.
The Corniche Road currently has seven major roundabouts starting from the VIP roundabout to the Conference Center roundabout after the Doha Sheraton.
Converting these roundabouts into intersections will immensely contribute to smooth flow of traffic on the road, a local Arabic daily reported yesterday.
Work is progressing on a new intersection on the Corniche Road between Al Meena street and Doha Port.
A section of the Corniche Road remains closed since last night to facilitate work on the new intersection.
One lane on each side of the Corniche Road, between the Port entrance and the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) roundabout, has been closed.
A lane on Al Meena street, leading from Al Rufaa intersection to the Corniche, has also been closed. Another lane is closed on the street exiting the Port.
A dedicated lane has been allocated for trucks entering the Port and those heading from the Port to Corniche Street. They can use the Sharq interchange instead of the MIA roundabout.
Once completed, the new intersection will ease the flow of traffic from Al Rufaa intersection towards the Corniche and allow direct access to the MIA Park, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) said in a statement.
