DOHA: The Doha Centre for Media Freedom (DCMF) has condemned the Jordanian government’s decision to block unlicensed websites.
“This draconian Press and Publication law represents a serious threat to online freedom of expression, especially in a country which is such a heavy consumer of online news. The centre is shocked to learn that instead of revising the law, the government decided to go ahead with the ban. In an age where mainstream media and citzen journalism coexist, it is unacceptable for the government to decide who can be considered a journalist,” said a DCMF statement yesterday.
The centre appealed to the Jordanian government to reconsider its decision and realise the impact of this shutdown on Jordan’s media.
Jordan’s press and publication department issued an order to all local Internet Service Providers to block some 300 news websites, that haven’t followed the mandatory registration and licensing process listed in the country’s heavily criticised Press and Publication law. The Peninsula
