DOHA: Eight new private schools and five private kindergartens are expected to open during the new academic year which begins on September 10, according to Al Sharq.

A statement issued by the Supreme Education Council (SEC) yesterday put the total number of Independent and private schools in the country at 349. This figure does not include the kindergartens. SEC said yesterday that it had completed all preparations for the new academic year.

A total of 17 catering companies have been selected to serve food at Independent school canteens.

They were selected from 41 applicants based on a rigorous process that started in May this year, SEC said. A list of dishes proposed for school canteens along with the prices has been circulated to the catering companies.

The school canteens have been monitored by a committee comprising representatives from the SEC, Supreme Council of Health and the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning.

The committee will conduct surprise visits to the canteens to ensure that the catering companies comply with the health regulations. An average of 20 inspections are conducted every week. The erring firms will face action, warned the SEC.
