DOHA: Qataris are helping thousands of orphans to go to school and have a good quality of life in impoverished countries, officials have said.
In all, 13,326 orphans in 23 African countries are being provided for by the Qatar-based Organisation of Islamic Daawa (Munazzamat). War-torn African countries have the largest number of orphans on the organisation’s sponsorship list. These include Sudan with 1,655 orphans, Somalia with 1,433 orphans and Uganda with 1,807 orphans, local Arabic daily Al Arab reported. In Yemen, 3,981 orphans are receiving such support.
Hamad Al Sheikh, director of the organisation in Doha, said that monthly contributions of QR200 to QR500 from Qatari citizens and residents enabled a student to go to school in Africa. People willing to contribute to the orphans can visit the organisation’s offices or to call its hotline (40407400).
