DOHA: The Minister of Transport and Chairman of UITP MENA and Mowasalat, H E Jassim Seif Al Sulaiti, underscored the role the transport sector plays in the lives of the people of Qatar and the country’s development.
He was speaking at the opening of the ‘Public Transport & Large Events Workshop’ hosted by Mowasalat at Al Mirqab Hotel yesterday.
“Doha changes every single day, thanks to infrastructure projects that will give way to a better future for our citizens.
“Transport has a particular importance in this framework and that’s why we are here today to exchange expertise and discuss challenges of transport in our cities to guarantee safety to everyone,” he said.
The Minister hoped Qatar would see a quantum leap in public transport with the combined efforts of Karwa and Qatar Rail and look for best solutions to challenges confronting the industry.
He also stressed people with special needs will be considered in all aspects of public transport.
The Minister said Mowasalat would host the second Summit on Public Transport & Large Events next November which would see “experts and decisionmakers from all across the world come to Doha to shed light on (public transport) challenges they face and the success stories they have achieved.”
The summit will discuss in more detail ideologies and serve as a platform for sharing ideas and experience and deliberating key issues on safety and security delivering successful large events.
It will be a step closer towards a new positive outcome to an integrated public transport network and mobility solutions.
Mowasalat and UITP organised the workshop programme with participation from Qatar Rail, Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, DIA, Ashghal, the Traffic Department, QMIC and key project owners in Doha, besides experts in the region.
Khalid Al Hogail, Chairman of UITP MENA Large Events and SAPTCO CEO, spoke on collaboration between UITP MENA Large Events Working Group and Mowasalat.
Speaking about the public transport interphase in the new Doha International Airport Project, Greame Cunningham highlighted the development plan for 2022. Brett Subritzky, Mowasalat Business Development Manager, highlighted Mowasalat’s initiatives to introduce water transport.
Omar Bondogji, Head of marketing and business development at Qatar Mobility Innovations Centre, spoke about enabling the FIFA World Cup 2022 with smart mobility solutions.
An interactive workshop, chaired by Young in-Kwon of the Korean Transport Institute in Seoul, discussed how the public transport authority and operators can determine professional and well-organised transport authority to ensure a well-functioning and integrated transport system within their territory and consider land use, parking policy, road management, traffic management system for sustained development, economic growth and management of large events.
