DOHA: A traffic police officer who was severely injured while trying to stop a speeding car and nearly lost his right forearm is now looking forward to going back to work, thanks to timely intervention by doctors at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).
Bader Salem Mohammad, 23, sustained severe injuries all over his body, especially his right forearm, apparently after he was hit by the car, and was quickly shifted to the Emergency Department at Hamad General Hospital (HGH).
“The impact of the vascular trauma on his arm was so severe that the blood vessels were completely cut off from the elbow down. There was complete dislocation of the right elbow with significant loss of soft tissue and neurovascular bundle (grouping of nerve and blood vessels). Similar cases often require amputation,” said Dr Maamoun Abou Samhadaneh, Specialist at the Orthopaedic Department at HGH.
However, Dr Mohamed Al Ateeq Al Dosari, Head of Orthopaedic Surgery, advised against amputation. Although the condition of the arm was very bad, he believed they could still give Bader a chance.
Racing against time, the team from Orthopaedics and Hand Surgery, comprising Dr Abou Samhadaneh, Dr Shamsi Abdul Hameed and Dr Al Dulaimi, conducted a surgery on what seemed like a hopeless case.
Bader successfully underwent the major operation for upper limb reconstruction, a complex surgical procedure that involves techniques such as revascularisation and skin grafting. Soon he will undergo another surgery that will involve nerve grafting and ligament reconstruction on his elbow.
As soon as his condition became stable, Bader was transferred to Rumailah Hospital, where he will undergo several months of physiotherapy to rehabilitate and help him regain the normal use of his arm, said Al Dosari. Bader demonstrated how he is now able to slightly move his arm and extend fingers. The Peninsula
