Doha: Under the patronage of the Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, the international conference on challenges to security and human rights in the Arab region opens today at the Ritz-Carlton Doha.
Organized by Qatar National Human Rights Committee, in cooperation with the General Secretariat of Arab Interior Ministers Council, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the General-Secretariat of Arab League and the Arab network for National Human Rights Institutions, the forum will bring together over 400 representatives of top international and Arab organisations working in the field of human rights, Arab Interior and Justice ministries, human rights departments of Arab foreign affairs ministries, security institutions, studies and research centres, government institutions and civil society organisations.
It will cover topics, including the relationship between security and human rights, experiences of Arab Interior Ministers Council and the High Commissioner for Human Rights as well as experiences of international organisations in dealing with security institutions in the field of human rights, and best human rights practices in security institutions.
It will feature workshops on challenges to security and human rights, codes of conduct for security institutions and capacity-building and role of police in promoting dialogue, alternative solutions and reforms of the security, penal and correctional institutions.
The majority of UN panels dealing with the subject of the forum and UN special rapporteurs will also attend. QNA
