Doha: Qatar’s Waleed Al Sharshani bounced back from his overnight third place to share the lead with Oman’s Hussain Al Jabri at the end of the second day of Sail the Gulf.
In the Laser Standard, Al Sharshani, who was in the third place, now have 8 nett points the same as Al Jabri. Another Omani sailor, Ahmed Al Balushi, slipped to the third spot.
The local sailors also excelled in two other categories, Laser 4.7 and Hobie 16. Adam Bettihthamou is in joint second in Laser 4.7 along with Saoud Al Naar of Bahrain, while Qatar’s pair of Hassan Al Baker and Mohamed Ahmed Ismail is in third spot.
UAE ‘s Hamza Al Ali heads the points tally in the Laser 4.7 with 11 points while Bettihthamou and Al Naar, have 13 points against their names.
In Hobie 16, Indian pair of Chinna Reddy and Yakobu Kalaga is lying on the top of the summit with five nett points. Kuwaiti pair of Nayef Al Hada and Mohammed Bastiki, are five points behind the leader, while the Qatar’s pair have 12 points. In Optimist class, Saif Al Mansoury of UAE, nine points, is in the top spot followed by Chitresh Tatha of India, with 12 nett points, followed by compatriot Navyn Prabhakar.
In Standard 470, Pakistan sailors have leap frogged to the first place displacing overnight leaders Praveen Prabhakar and Vishnu Sujeesh, pushing them to the third spot. The pair of Shabahat Ullah and Shazli Tahir is in the first place followed by Muhammad Akram Tariq and Khalid Hussain.
In Laser Radial, UAE’s Saeed Al Zaidi managed to cling to his overnight lead and is followed by Ebrahim Showaiter of Bahrain, while Najeeb Ullah of Pakistan is in third place.
Around 110 sailors from 20 countries including Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Canada, Britain, Denmark, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Oman, Pakistan, Portugal, Romania, UAE and Qatar are taking part in the championship which will end on February 7.
