Panama City: Seventeen people are dead after a bus crashed in central Panama on Sunday, local emergency services said.

Dozens of people were also injured in the crash in the Anton district in the centre of the country, after the bus smashed into a wall and then fell into a river.

Most of the victims were farm labourers.

Panama's President Juan Carlos Varela offered his condolences on Twitter and said that the government would support the families of the victims.

He also ordered a nationwide day of mourning for Monday.
