DOHA: Student businesswomen have joined professional retailers to take part in a ‘Qatar University Market’ to raise money for cancer patients in Doha.
This year’s annual Charity Market, which opened yesterday and runs until May 16 at the women’s activities building, features 17 retailers selling products including clothes, shoes, accessories, cosmetics, home accessories and food. It is the first time that student entrepreneurs have taken part.
The market, which is organised by the university’s Student Activities department, has so far raised QR 212,000. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Al Amal Oncology hospital in Doha.
Third-year business student Noora Al Hajari set up her party planning business Queen Designs just two months ago, and is selling cupcakes, snacks and other party accessories at the market.
She said: “I am a business student and I wanted to set up my own company. I have had a lot of support from my family and I hope this market will help people to know about us and what we do.”
Student Activities’ Head of Annual Events and Special Projects Salwa Zainel said: “The market is one of our key fundraising events and we hope to build on previous successes to raise a significant amount of money for a very worthwhile cause. “This year, we are also encouraging student businesswomen to take part and get inspiration working alongside professional retailers.”
