DOHA: The first ever Qatar Sports Film Festival (QSFF) is currently accepting submissions for short films until May 15, organisers The Youth Company (TYC) and Qatar Olympic & Sports Museum (QOSM) announced yesterday.
QSFF, which is aimed at promoting the art of screenwriting and filmmaking in sports and the Olympics while also encouraging sports engagement and healthy lifestyle, will be held on May 24 and 25 at AlRiwaq Doha exhibition space.
Filmmakers and sports fans are invited to submit short films of five to 10 minutes in length that focus on a sport related theme such as sport games, sport values, teamwork, large sporting events, ancient Olympia, modern Olympic Games and competition. The short films can be submitted on a DVD or USB to dedicated locations until May 15, 2013 or sent by mail to the QOSM at the Qatar Museums Authority Tower: P O Box 2777.
Submissions that comply with the QSFF terms and conditions will be judged by a jury. The top ten submissions selected will be screened during the festival and the top three winners will be announced at the closing ceremony on May 25 and will receive QR10,000 for first place, QR8,000 for second place, and QR6,000 for third place. The 2013 QSFF includes a short film contest and public screenings of sports documentaries and films as well as panel discussions with members of the local film and sports industries, and official opening and closing ceremonies.
“We very much hope for a variety of contribution from local filmmakers, as they have the sole knowledge to cover the heritage of sports in Qatar”, says Dr Christian Wacker, Director of QOSM. “QSFF intends to promote sports and sports culture among the community,” said Aya Abu Issa, Chief Executive Director of TYC. “The Youth Company has already actively contributed to raising a healthy young generation by organizing the “Run The World” Festival in the past two years. QSFF is another way to approach the topic from a different perspective and we are happy to partner with Qatar Olympic & Sports Museum to bring this event to the public.”
QSFF is under the patronage of the Fédération Internationale Cinéma Télévision Sportifs (FICTS), an international organisation aimed at promoting Olympic values through cinema and television. The Peninsula
