NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday named a former International Monetary Fund chief economist as its new central bank governor as it grapples with a plunging currency and the slowest growth in a decade.

A senior finance ministry official told AFP that Raghuram Rajan would head the Reserve Bank of India, replacing incumbent D. Subbarao, who retires next month.

Rajan currently is the most senior advisor in the finance ministry.

"Mr Rajan will be the new central bank governor," the official, who did not wish to be identified, said. (AFP)
