DOHA: A severe shortage of king and other types of popular fish has led to unprecedented hike in their prices although generally the demand for seafood goes down during the fasting month of Ramadan due to heavier intake of meat, dates and desserts.

A major hypermarket said the price of king fish, which is quite popular with expatriates, peaked at QR90 per kg on Sunday. Fish vendors said the catch comes down considerably during the sizzling summer months, while some demand is still there for some types of fish, especially king fish and hamour, which leads to price escalations.
