DOHA: The United Kingdom continues to be a preferred destination for Qatari students to pursue their higher education overseas.

The number of Qatari students leave the country to study in the UK has increased every year, according to the ‘Higher Education Student Data, UK.’ Over 1,280 students from Qatar studied in the UK in 2012 and the total number in 2011 was 1,160, with a majority of them studying undergraduate and post graduate courses. Only 908 Qatari students went to the UK in 2009.

The UK remains a popular destination for Qatari students due to several reasons such as education excellence, wide choice of subjects and as the higher education system in the UK is a combination of the best elements of tradition and modernity, Helen Kidd,  Head of Programmes and Partnerships at British Council Qatar, told The Peninsula yesterday.

Engineering, science and information technology, business studies, computing are most popular study areas among Qatari students. Majority of Qatari undergraduate students are males and there is a balance between male and female students doing postgraduate studies in the UK, said Kidd on the backdrop of a College Fair being held in Doha presently.

The three-day fair is organised by the Supreme Education Council in collaboration with the British embassy and the British Council for Qatari students.

“Number of Qatari students in the UK has increased by 17 percent from 2011 to 2012. UK has been a favourite destination for Qatari student historically. They choose UK due to excellence in study programmes, huge selection of subjects and UK is not quite far from Qatar,” said Kidd.

Approximately 90 universities are participating in the fair and 47 of them are institutions from the UK. The fair will end today.

The British Council was involved in bringing the UK institutions to the fair. The British Council plays an important role in helping students gain a positive educational experience in the UK.  They advise students on decisions about where and what to study, guiding them through the application process and offering advice in times of crisis.
