DOHA: Qatar Biobank has been awarded two International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) certifications by British Standards Institute Middle East (BSI).
As a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, the centre supports QF’s mission to ensure that the country addresses national health priorities by enabling research on the causes of diseases prevailing in Qatar.
Qatar Biobank is one of the first QF centres to receive ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 for quality management systems and information security management, respectively.
Working with the Supreme Council of Health and Hamad Medical Corporation and supported by scientists from Imperial College London, the centre will enable research on health issues in Qatar.
Omar Rashid, General Manager, BSI, presented the certifications to the centre at a ceremony at Qatar Foundation Student Center in Education City. The ceremony was attended by the centre’s staff, board members, key stakeholders and partners.
As the world’s largest developer of international standards, ISO specifications ensure quality, safety and efficiency across various industries.
With the centre set for wide-scale public launch next year, having collected health information and biological samples from more than 1,700 members of the local community, the certifications represent a milestone, enabling the organisation to welcome more participants.
“As part of our ramp-up phase, the increase in participants will be significant. Achieving these global certifications is integral in paving the way for the centre to develop innovative scientific outputs that can be applied globally in accordance with industry best practice,” said Dr Hadi Abderrahim, Managing Director, Qatar Biobank.
Rashid said: “On behalf of our board of directors, Chairman Sir David Brown and Regional Managing Director, BSI, Middle East and Africa, Theuns Kotze, I would like to congratulate Qatar Biobank on achieving these certifications. I am delighted to be here to help mark the occasion, and praise the centre for leading by example, with its commitment to achieve compliance with the two global standards.”
