DOHA: Katara yesterday released a book that digs deep into the history of some of the ancient architectural marvels in Qatar.
Entitled “Castles, forts and towers in Qatar,” the book written by Dr Haya Al Thani is Katara’s latest release following the launch of a book on the founder of Qatar last National Day.
“Castles, forts and towers in Qatar” is a record of the historical structures in the country, their detailed information and fascinating facts that may interest readers.
It comprises three chapters and conclusion. The first chapter talks about castles and forts dating back to Early Islamic period, chapter two on palaces during the late Islamic era while chapter three is dedicated entirely for the towers.
The book includes castles such as Zekreet, Maroub, Umm Salal Mohammed, Al Wajbah, Al Zubarah and Al Shaqab. Forts such as Ruwaidah, Al Khuair, and Al Huwailah and famous towers like Al Khor and Barzan are also contained in the book.
Considered a vital reference, the book traces the development of these structures and talks about their influences in the surrounding areas It also details the various designs that exist in these buildings.
Speaking at a press conference that marked the launch of the book, Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti said “Castles, forts and towers in Qatar” is one of the important books that document the history, culture and heritage of Qatar.
Dr Al Sulaiti said the book also highlights the historical value of the structures linking the new generations with the history of their forefathers, thus reinforcing their affinity to their roots.
The book not only tells of the ancient landmarks from a historical point of view but also unveils the beauty of these Islamic structures in terms of architecture engineering and art.
Dr Al Thani said writing the book needed much effort because it required scientific research and gathering data through oral tradition provided by Qatari elders.
“This would make an excellent reference book which will fill the gap in Arabic libraries which has a dearth of such kind of books dealing with architecture and historical buildings in Qatar,” said Dr Nadia Al Madakha, director of research and studies centre at Katara,
She said such documentation of historical buildings will encourage other researchers to further conduct research on this area, enrich historical records and raise awareness among people on the history of Qatar.
Dr Mohammad Hammam Fikri, a researcher, said anyone who reads this book will discover the invaluable heritage and civilization of Qatar and live the history and glory of the country.
