Vitoria, Spain--Italy's Fabio Felline edged out Michael Matthews of Australia to win the second stage of the Tour of the Basque Country on Tuesday.
Matthews, who won Monday's opening stage, held onto his overall lead ahead of world road race champion Michal Kwiatkowski.
But 25-year-old Trek rider Felline had the strength to hold off a late charging Matthews at the end of a lumpy 175.4km run from Bilbao to Vitoria, with Frenchman Tony Gallopin taking third.
