DOHA: The Supreme Council of Health (SCH) will tomorrow launch its nutrition guidelines to promote healthy life style among citizens and expatriates.
The advisory includes eight recommendations on choosing healthy food and following healthy life style in Qatar to reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
The guidelines are issued in line with the five year National Health Strategy 2011-2016.
It aims to curb the prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases, different types of cancer and reduce deaths caused by such illnesses, the Qatar News Agency reported yesterday.
To achieve this objective some policies and programs will be implemented to curb obesity and over-weight, promote physical activities as well as healthy eating habits.
The guidelines were prepared by a team comprising representatives from different organisations including the SCH, Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar University, Qatar Diabetes Association, Qatar Foundation, Aspetar, Sidra Medical and Research Center, Weill Cornell Medical College and the Qatar National Programme for Food Security.
In this connection, the SCH is organizing a two- day conference beginning tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Qatar will mark the World Health Day which is being observed today worldwide under the slogan “food safety.”
According to the World Health Organisation, about two million people are dying in the world every year due to unsafe food and most of the victims are children.
In a statement issued in this context, the SCH said that it has imposed strict monitoring on imported food.
Last year it checked about 1.54 billion kg of imported food of which about 2.5 million kg was rejected and 1.27 million kg destroyed.
