NHRC to help promote human rights in Asia-Pacific

National Human Rights Committee Chairman Dr Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri and the Director of the Asia-Pacific Forum secretariat, Kieren Fitzpatrick, signing an agreement on cooperation between the two bodies.

NEW DELHI: Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Asia-Pacific Forum (APF) to strengthen regional cooperation and coordination in protection and promotion of human rights, and to enhance awareness and protection of human rights in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
The agreement was signed by NHRC Chairman Dr Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri and the director of the APF secretariat, Kieren Fitzpatrick.
Under the agreement, the two parties will share the strategic objective of supporting human rights institutions in the Asia-Pacific region and encourage the creation of new institutions in accordance with international standards.
The deal seeks to help AFP fulfil its role as a coordinator of regional human rights organisations in the Asia-Pacific region, strengthens regional cooperation on human rights issues and helps national human rights institutions in the Asia-Pacific region.
Meanwhile, the NHRC chairman met the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission in India, Justice K G Balakrishnan, on the sidelines of the ongoing 19th APF Annual Meeting. The two discussed mutual cooperation and exchange of expertise in human rights issues between the two bodies.
