New York: The State of Qatar stressed that fulfilling commitments under treaties governing chemical, biological and nuclear weapons is essential to international efforts to eliminate weapons of mass destruction and protect humanity.

Qatar made the statement during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly First Committee under the agenda item "Other Weapons of Mass Destruction."

It was delivered by First Secretary at Qatar's Permanent Mission to the United Nations Talal Abdulaziz Al Naama.

Qatar called on the international community to intensify efforts to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, prohibit and criminalize their use under any circumstances, and ensure full compliance with relevant international treaties.

As a member of the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for 2026-2028, Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the full and effective implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

It also highlighted efforts to update national legislation in line with international obligations, including the Biological Weapons Convention.

The statement noted that the OPCW Executive Council adopted Qatar's proposal to restore the rights and privileges of the Syrian Arab Republic within the organization during its 112th session in The Hague on July 9, 2026. The proposal was co-sponsored by 66 States Parties, following Qatar-led diplomatic consultations to build broad consensus.

Qatar also expressed pride in joining the Syria-led international task force, launched in New York on March 19, alongside Turkiye, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, and looked forward to working together to achieve its objectives.
