Community classes help people keen on art and design to pick up skill.
This year, VCUarts Qatar – a Qatar Foundation partner university – is offering free taster sessions in graphic design, interior design, fashion design and painting and print-making for members of the public interested in exploring the University’s art and design community classes.
The community classes, held by VCUarts Qatar’s Community Education Program twice a year, are for those keen to pick up skills in art and design as a hobby, or who would like to enhance their creative practice for career purposes. The program covers courses in different disciplines, to fit various interests, levels of skill, and age groups.
The free taster sessions will be held online in September, following which participants can choose from an array of individual courses that will be held in person at VCUarts Qatar from October 12 to December 7. All classes are scheduled for the evenings at or after 5.30 pm, making it ideal for those working during the day. However, based on evolving government rules and regulations, all classes may be shifted online. The taster sessions and courses are led by professional artists and designers, including VCUarts Qatar alumni.
“This year, we’re delighted to be able to offer free taster sessions to members of the public,” Aysha AlKhooheji, Program Manager for Community and Continuing Education said. “This means that participants now have the luxury of gaining an overview of graphic design, interior design, fashion design and painting and printmaking, a few weeks before choosing specialized individual programs.
“Our instructors, who include our own alumni, have considerable experience in leading such community classes, and they’re excited at the prospect of being able to introduce members of the public to various art and design pathways.” Participants are requested to adhere to the guidelines stipulated by the MoPH. These include movement inside the building as indicated by signage and adhering to a 1.5 meter distance between people, wearing masks at all times, and displaying the green Ehteraz status on request.
All instructors are fully vaccinated. Participants are required to be vaccinated as well, or will need to provide a proof of a weekly rapid antigen test required for building entry and an in-person instruction.
