DOHA: Male beauty therapists in Qatar would get an opportunity to gain international qualifications as Tajmeel Qatar International Beauty Academy will open doors for males by end of the month.
The first course offered will be on spa therapy as an experimental project.
Training for male spa therapists will be a pilot project and around eight students for a six months part-time course will be given admission.
“This is a programme for people working in the industry to enhance their skills. There are many who have many years of experience but not qualifications,” Beverley Crowther, Principal, Tajmeel, told The Peninsula yesterday.
The courses are likely to be expanded into hair dressing following the pilot project. Most students registered for the course are Arabs from countries, including Egypt and Jordan.
“Demand for beauty therapy is high in Qatar. Hair therapy and make-up is very popular among the Qataris,” said Crowther.
Curriculum will be designed by Tajmeel’s international partners and the course will cover anatomy and physiology of the entire body and spa management.
The male students will have their lessons separately from their female colleagues and possibly on a men only day.
Founded in 2009 by the Social Development Centre, member of Qatar Foundation, Tajmeel is Qatar’s first training academy where students can obtain an internationally recognised beauty therapy qualification.
For the past years it has been conducting long- and short-term courses for female students.
They study beauty therapy, holistic therapy, make-up and hair dressing.
The academy has many Qatari students and 90 percent of them follow short courses designed mainly for self-grooming.
At least 30 percent of the total students have enrolled for long-term professional courses. Among them the first batch following International CIDESCO Diploma, will take their exams in June.
