DOHA: There was a 35 percent increase in the number of Qatari working women last year, according to a report released by Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) on the eve of International Women’s Day, which is being observed around the world today.
The majority of the Qatari working women (73 percent) were employed in the public sector, with most of them engaged in administrative and academic jobs (51 percent).
One of the most important achievements of Qatar is a significant increase in literacy rates. Only 3.1 percent of Qatari women and 4.2 percent of local men were illiterate, according to last year’s figures.
Of Qataris who held a primary school certificate, seven percent were male and 11 percent female. Among those who had finished middle school, 18 percent were male and 13 percent female, while 32 percent of those who had completed secondary education were male and 27 percent female.
Among higher diploma holders, three percent were male and two percent female, while 29 percent of those who had received higher education were male and 33 percent female.
In 2003, out of 29 members elected to the Central Municipal Council, one was a woman. In 2011, 13.7 percent of Qatari lawyers were women while the number of women in sports during 2010-11 was 1,191, which was seven percent of the total number of athletes during that period.
