Cricket legend and chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (Movement for Justice) party Imran Khan (centre) is surrounded by supporters during an election rally in Karachi, yesterday.

PESHAWAR: With attacks continuing on election rallies and offices and candidates on a daily basis all over Pakistan, the current electioneering has already turned out to be the deadliest in the country’s history.

The Awami National Party (ANP) is the prime target after suffering 24 attacks since March 30. The latest major attack was carried out on the election gathering of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) in Kurram Agency yesterday that reportedly killed 23 people and wounded over 70.

The JUI-F candidate for NA-38, Munir Orakzai, who was the target of the bombing, remained unharmed but another party contestant from NA-37, Ainuddin Shakir was injured.

The election has been postponed in two constituencies in Karachi and Hyderabad after candidates of the ANP and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) lost one candidate each in attacks by armed men.

The election offices of the MQM, ANP and Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) in Karachi have come under attack during the last few weeks. Several attacks were carried out on the election meetings, rallies and candidates of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), JUI-F, Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), National People’s Party and Baluchistan National Party.
