DOHA: Students at universities within the Education City will soon be able to read majors at one university while taking on a minor at another, said H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, at the sixth convocation of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development held at the Qatar National Convention Centre yesterday.
The first cross registration will be an undergraduate degree in Journalism and Political Sciences at Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) and Georgetown University—School of Foreign Service in Qatar (SFS-Qatar).
“It is our aim to deepen and diversify the academic knowledge of our graduates; this is why one of Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s main priorities is to become a hub promoting all efforts of cooperation, coordination and interaction between the various universities of Education City,” said Sheikha Moza.
“I expect of this initiative to academically enhance the students’ knowledge and enrich their future. This is the model that we thought would characterise our academic project — a project that would encompass new and diverse programs offered by a number of universities, she added.
Sheikha Moza also announced that an Executive Masters in Energy and Resources, a Masters in Library and Information Studies, and an Academic Research and Methods certificate programme will be soon launched at the at the Hamad bin Khalifa University.
Qatar Foundation yesterday celebrated the 2013 convocation with the highest number of graduates in Foundation’s history in a range of diversified subjects.
A total of 437 students graduated this year in subjects including design, computer science, Islamic studies, engineering, international relations and medicine from eight universities within the Education City.
The students received rings from Dr Abdulla bin Ali Al Thani, President of Hamad bin Khalifa University and Vice President of Education at Qatar Foundation before they did the traditional walk through the ‘Door to the Future,’ symbolising their passage from QF universities to the next stage of their lives.
Jimmy Wales Founder of Wikipedia, delivered the keynote address to the graduates.
He stressed the need for taking risks and innovative actions to address the needs of the world through an inspirational speech.
The Qatar Leadership Academy performed the Qatar National Anthem and the Education City Anthem alongside Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra and Children’s Choir of the Al Jazeera Children’s Channel on the occasion.
