New Delhi: As part of plans for Ganga’s rejuvenation, transport of passengers and goods between Varanasi and Hooghly on the Hindu holy river is being contemplated, an official statement said yesterday.
Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari chaired a meeting to lay a roadmap for Ganga rejuvenation, the statement said.
In the meeting, also attended by Environment and Forest Minister Prakash Javadekar along with Water Resources and Ganga Rejuvenation Minister Uma Bharti, a decision was taken to constitute an inter-ministerial committee of secretaries under the chairmanship of water resources secretary for preparing a plan for Ganga rejuvenation in about a month’s time.
Lightning kills 10, hurts 6 in Bihar
Patna: At least 10 people including four women were killed and six injured yesterday in three districts of Bihar when lightning struck them, officials said.
Six people were killed in villages near Farbisganj town in Araria district while two each were killed in a village in Katihar and Supaul districts. “All of them were killed by bolts of lightning,” said an official of the state disaster management department.
Half a dozen people were injured and are currently hospitalised, he said. Pre-monsoon rains accompanied by strong winds lashed Araria, Katihar and Supaul early yesterday.
Lightning strikes during the June-September monsoon season are common, with villagers housed in bamboo and grass huts more at risk.
IB official’s Delhi house burgled
New Delhi: The house of a deputy director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) has been burgled of cash and jewellery estimated at Rs3.5m, police said yesterday. The incident took place on Wednesday in Tughlak Road area.
Police said the family of Rajesh Subarno, an Indian Police Service officer of West Bengal cadre who is currently posted in Manipur, had gone to Imphal to meet him when the crime took place.
