BAALBEK, Lebanon: Twin roadside bombs, detonated minutes apart, wounded a woman and two soldiers in eastern Lebanon yesterday, a security source said.

The first device went off as a civilian vehicle passed along the main highway from the town of Baalbek towards the Syrian border, just 200m from an army checkpoint at the entrance to the town of Hermel, the security source said.

The second bomb exploded when a military vehicle arrived on the scene. An officer was among the two soldiers wounded.

Security sources said that the incident was linked to the conflict in neighbouring Syria.

Two roadside bombs targeted convoys belonging to Shia militant group Hezbollah in June amid mounting Sunni resentment at its intervention in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad against the mainly Sunni rebels, Lebanese media reported.

There have also been deadly clashes in the northern city of Tripoli between supporters and opponents of Assad’s regime and in the southern city of Sidon between Sunni opponents of Hezbollah and the army.  AFP
