Environment Ministry signs deal with QU to evaluate impact of camping season

Doha: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change signed a contract with Qatar University to conduct field surveys, showing the impact and evaluation of winter camps on the environment in terms of social and environmental terms during the winter camping season. 

The contract was signed in the presence of the Minister of Environment and Climate Change     H E Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali Al Thani.

The contract was signed by the Assistant Undersecretary for Environmental Protection Reserves and Wildlife Department, Dr. Ibrahim Al Maslamani,  on behalf of the Ministry, and Dr. Mariam Al Ali Al Maadeed, Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies at Qatar University (QU).

Dr. Al Maslamani confirmed that the agreement would enable research centres at QU to study the negative effects on the environment during the camping season.

He pointed out that the contract comes within the framework of cooperation in the field of scientific studies and research at the university, whereby cooperation will be conducted to study the impact on the gardens, plants and wild animals, coasts and beaches, in addition to the impact of waste and sewage in camps on the environment during the camping season, as well as the impact of winter camping on the movement of and the reproduction of organisms (sea turtle nesting season) and influence on bird migration.

For her part, Dr. Al Maadeed stressed that Qatar University has extensive experience in research related to the environment, energy and human sciences in general, as the Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI) is one of QU’s strong pillars on research.

She pointed out that caring for the environment is one of the main pillars of Qatar University and that cooperation with the Ministry supports Qatar National Vision 2030 and the sustainable development goals.
