DOHA: Millions are participating in a global campaign to free Aljazeera journalists detained in Cairo since July 3.
The number of people  demanding the release of journalists has risen to 141m all over the world, using hashtag #FreeAJstaff and millions more are participating in the campaign that started in February on other social media networks, reported the Arabic daily Al Sharq.
The campaign began in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi where journalists used #FreeAJstaff to protest the abuse of freedom and arrest of journalists in Egypt.
The hashtag has been gaining popularity, especially after the American broadcaster Christian Amanpour announced her support for the campaign on her program Amanpour on CNN.
The announcement came on February 27 and since then the campaign and the hashtag have gained prominence.
Many official and government establishments have endorsed the campaign and demanded in announcements and press statements immediate release of Aljazeera journalists.
They include  the White House, the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Commonwealth, the European Union, the Australian government, and about 150 human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, Committee to protect Journalists, and International Press Institute.
The campaign has also attracted about 40 media personalities writing an open letter to the authorities in Egypt to release the journalists, and protect the freedom of expression and journalists in the world.
Media establishments and international channels, including the BBC, CNN, ITN, Channel 4 Britain, Toronto Star of Canada, have also called for the release of the journalists.
The campaign is also being supported by media personalities, including Larry King, Piers Morgan, Brian Stelter and Alex Thompson. The Peninsula
