Stephan and Thomas Meissner during a workshop.
DOHA: German tape artists Stephan and Thomas Meissner conducted workshops in Katara and at the German International School Doha (DISD) from November 1 to 4.
The four-day workshops were held through the invitation of the German Embassy in collaboration with Katara Art Studios.
‘Tape That’ is a Berlin-based artist collective founded in 2011. Inspired by the possibility to create something out of an everyday object, ‘Tape That’ mostly work with tape as a medium. With roots in the urban art movement, their works range from complex and colourful tape and light installations to minimalist black and white wall paintings and can be found in a variety of places such as abandoned buildings, showrooms and galleries.
Participants in the Katara workshop, whether artists or interested people who had not previously joined in any art workshops, enjoyed working with the material. Guided by the artists they created real works of art. Students of DISD also had great fun working with the tape artists and developed their own creations, some of which will be on display at the school.
The artists were thrilled by the creativity of the students as well as the participants at the Katara workshop: “This is our first visit to Doha and we are happy to have had the opportunity to work with students and artists from so many different backgrounds. We were especially delighted to integrate Arabic calligraphy into the art works in Doha. This was a first for us!” Art works from both workshops were exhibited during the German National Day celebrations held at the St Regis Hotel in Doha. The Peninsula
