National Day activities lined up

DOHA: Eighteen expatriate schools and many community organisations are participating in National Day activities, including  cultural and musical extravaganzas and sport competitions.
Activities by the National Day Celebrations Organizing Committee, in association with the Ministry of Interior, will be held in Al Wakra, Industrial Area, Rayyan and Al Khor on December 18 from 8am to 10pm.
“The National Day celebration is not merely a festival or celebration, but is a day to commemorate noble values and principles taught to us by the great founder of modern Qatar Sheikh Jassim bin Muhammed Al Thani,” Col. Abdullah Khalifa Al Muftah, Director, Public Relations Department, and Convener,  Associated Activities of Qatar National Day Celebrations 2014’,  told a press conference yesterday.
He said the National Day theme is ‘Honesty and Loyalty’, which was one of the values of Sheikh Jassim.
Thanking schools and communities, he said through the event “we aim to provide a joyous environment for the expatriate communities to take part in the celebrations in places closer to them.”
The Indian and Sri Lankan community teams and students of Ideal, Pak Shama, Sri Lankan and Scholars schools will hold cultural and musical performances at West End Park amphitheatre, while the Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities, along with students of PEC, Bangladesh School, Bhavan’s, Shantiniketan and TNG will be hosted at Wakra Sports Club.
The Indonesian, Malaysian and Filipino community teams and students of Philippine School Doha, Philippine International School Qatar, Noble and Doha Modern Indian School will be hosted at Rayyan Sports Club’s indoor stadium, where they will present cultural and musical items.
Traditional, cultural and folklore shows by the Nepalese and Al Khor community teams and performances of MES Indian School, Bright Future, Birla, DPS-MIS and National KG will take place at Al Khor Sports Club.
Celebrations in the four venues will include colourful thematic parade by participating schools showcasing rich Qatari culture, customs, traditions, heritage and distinct features.
The morning programme will include inter-school cultural competitions with group songs and a thematic Qatar show followed by performances by communities.
Tug-of-war and racing competitions will be held between noon and 3pm in which teams representing communities, schools and companies will take part.
In the afternoon programme, students will compete in thematic performances, general shows and songs, followed by cultural extravaganza by communities. Each community will stage shows and performances featuring Qatar’s rich culture and tradition and of their countries.
A football tourney will be held at Al Wakra, Rayyan and Al Khor sports clubs between company, community and school teams and a cricket match at West End Park.
Blood sugar check-ups, a traffic awareness competition, first-aid training, seat belt and driving convincer will also be held at the venues.
The top four winning school teams in the competitions will receive QR7000, QR5000, QR3000 and QR2000. Football match winners and runners-up will receive QR3000 and QR2000.
