Police arrest four fugitives

MANILA: Police arrested four fugitives in separate operations, the Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Chief Superintendent Francisco Uyami said yesterday. Ray Rios, wanted for murder in Quezon City, was arrested on July 7 in a slum in Barangay Tatalon, Quezon City. The Quezon Regional Trial Court had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant. In Purok Licao-licao, Bulacan, police nabbed Paquito Salindayao. He has a standing non-bailable warrant issued by the Malolos Regional Trial Court for murder. In Zambales, a warrant was issued by an Olongapo City court against Venerando Paje for attempted rape, who was nabbed at Barangay Consuelo Norte, San Marcelino Zambales on July 5. On July 4, Roberto Pabon was held in Lapaz, Iloilo City, for attempted murder.

Assistance for fire victims

MANILA: Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay ordered yesterday the release of financial and material assistance to some 121 families in Barangay Tejeros which was hit by fire on Sunday night. Makati Fire Marshal Ricardo Perdigon said the fire started at about 9:41pm and reached the third alarm at 9.55pm. Arson investigators are still probing the cause of the fire that razed some 40 houses. The blaze was put out at 10:37pm. Makati Social Welfare and Development chief Ryan Barcelo said the victims are presently sheltered at the open court in Batute St, Barangay Tejeros. He said the victims are undergoing standard registration and validation process to determine the legitimate recipients of financial assistance.

Student hurt in rebel attack

MANILA: A student was wounded when suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas fired at a police car escorting a fun run activity in Gubat, Sorsogon yesterday, in an apparent move to avenge the killing of eight rebels in an encounter with government security forces last week, the military said. Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo said the 17-year-old female student was hit in both feet after rebels harassed policemen securing an activity of the Bicol University in Barangay Buenavista.

Rape suspect in police net

KIDAPAWAN City: Policemen, disguised as peasants, arrested early Sunday a rape suspect who escaped from the detention facility of the city police last March. Superintendent Leo Ajero, city police director, said the 48-year-old Armando Minoza did not resist arrest when policemen barged into his friend’s house in Barangay Paco, where he has been hiding since his escape from prison last March. Minoza was litigated for rape by the Regional Trial Court here.

More Filipinos dying of Aids

MANILA: More and more Filipinos are dying of Aids, the Department of Health said yesterday. Data from the National Epidemiology Centre show at least one Filipino dies every month. The department said 177 people died last year compared to 69 in 2011. In the first five months of 2012, 65 died. Experts said the highest number of deaths occurred among the 25-29 age group, followed by 30-34 and 35-39 groups. Agencies
