Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Municipality, represented by the Public Cleanliness Department, has invited members of the public to participate in a series of beach and island clean-up campaigns as part of its 2026 community initiatives aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and civic engagement.
The initiative is being organised in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aligns with the environmental pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030, which seeks to balance economic growth with environmental protection and sustainable resource management.
The ministry said the campaign reflects its commitment to preserving Qatar’s natural landscapes and marine ecosystems through community participation and environmental awareness. The clean-up activities are designed to encourage residents to take an active role in protecting public spaces while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among all segments of society.
According to the campaign schedule for June 2026, volunteer activities will take place at several coastal locations. The first event was held at Ras Al Nouf on June 6, followed by a clean-up campaign at Simaisma Beach on June 13. Additional events are scheduled for Al Kharayej Beach on June 20 and Al Wakrah Family Beach on June 27.
Located north of Doha, Al Kharayej Beach has become a popular destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts due to its wide sandy shoreline and proximity to rapidly developing residential areas. The beach attracts visitors seeking recreational activities and relaxation, making it an important public space that benefits from regular environmental conservation efforts. The clean-up campaign will help maintain the area’s natural beauty and ensure a safe and pleasant environment for beachgoers.
Meanwhile, Al Wakrah Family Beach is one of Qatar’s most frequented coastal destinations, known for its family-friendly facilities, calm waters, and expansive recreational areas. The beach serves as a major attraction for residents and visitors throughout the year and is particularly popular during weekends and public holidays. Organisers believe the clean-up campaign will contribute to enhancing the visitor experience while protecting the coastal ecosystem from litter and marine pollution.
The ministry emphasised that marine debris, particularly plastic waste, poses significant risks to wildlife and coastal habitats. By removing waste from beaches and shorelines, volunteers can play a direct role in safeguarding marine species and preserving biodiversity.
Officials also noted that community-based environmental initiatives help strengthen public awareness about responsible waste disposal and the importance of reducing pollution at its source. Such campaigns not only improve the appearance of public beaches but also contribute to broader national efforts to promote sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The Ministry of Municipality encouraged individuals, families, schools, and community organisations to participate in the campaign, highlighting that collective action remains essential to preserving Qatar’s natural heritage and ensuring a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.
