Doha: The Public Works Authority — Ashghal — has started working in early June to renovate the sewerage network in inner Doha, especially in Najma.
The project is set to be completed in the fourth quarter of next year, Ashghal said in a statement yesterday.
Renovation comes as Najma has seen a significant increase in population that require rehabilitation and expansion of all sewer facilities and replacing them with a higher capacity network that will be sufficient for all sewerage flows for 50 years.
The short-term goal of the project is to find a permanent solution for the sewerage water overflow and accommodate the increase in population in Najma.
The old sewerage network, built earlier to meet the requirements of a limited number of residents, is not sufficient for the current flows.
The long-term goal is to renovate the network in the southern areas of Doha where the population has reached close to one million. The project will support economic and social development in the areas by increasing the capacity of current networks, developing them and connecting them to more efficient, environment friendly pump stations with fewer emissions.
All old sewerage pipelines from 150 to 400mm in diameter will be replaced with new pipelines from 200 to 1,200mm diameter to improve the network’s efficiency and control environmental dangers caused by sewerage overflow.
In addition to improving the lives of residents, the project will contribute to sustaining the environment, Ashghal said.
The project is in southern Doha bordered by B-Ring Road in the north, C-Ring Road in the south, Al Matar Street in the east and Najma Street in the west. Works will include replacement of 20km of pipelines and about 500 sewer access manholes to allow access to sewerage pipelines for maintenance. QNA
