DOHA: The Ministry of Business and Trade is looking for new import markets for poultry products and some types of fruits and vegetables as well after the decision of Saudi Arabia to ban the export of these products has led to some shortages in the local market.
A proposal based on a complete report about new markets with details of the needs of these commodities for the local market is at the table of the Minister of Business and Trade, H E Sheikh Jassem bin Abdul Aziz Al Thani for approval, Al Sharq reported yesterday.
Dr Naser Al Tuwaim, Director of the Consumer Protection Department of Saudi Arabia, has meanwhile called on the Saudi authorities to review their decision to bann the export of poultry products to GCC countries saying the move would hamper the country’s export mechanisms.
Only two percent of chicken production is being exported from Saudi Arabia to GCC countries so a ban would not have any serious impact on the local market (Saudi Arabia), said Al Tuwaim. He added that the export of poultry products from Saudi Arabia to the international market is not more than 20 percent.
Al Tuwaim hinted that the the Saudi government’s ban move followed public outcry against soaring prices of poultry products, especially frozen chicken.
The shooting prices of poultry products triggered Saudi citizens to launch camping on Twitters and Facebook for boycotting these products.
