ISLAMABAD: The strength of women on the voters’ list has reached more than 40 million as the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) of Pakistan had issued 40,611,518 computerised national identity cards (CNIC) till yesterday, the International Women’s Day.
CNIC has reached to a number of 40,611,518 women, including in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (5,385,530), Fata (634,360), Punjab (22,562,339), Sindh (8,788,842), Balochistan (1,471,158), Islamabad (400,366), Gilgit-Baltistan (273,332) and Azad Kashmir (1,095,591), Nadra said.
The Nadra has been endeavouring to empower Pakistani women by providing basic rights as enshrined in the constitution of Pakistan, and has adopted a fair and equal employment policy to empower women in every walk of life, Nadra said.
Nadra stands out as a public sector organisation with over 2,200 women employees, who make up 13 percent of its total workforce, whereas the government quota for women is 10 percent, the Nadra maintained.
USAID officials get flak for wrong map
ISLAMABAD: The projection of a wrong map of Pakistan by USAID officials during an event at the Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) office has provoked much anger, both among Mepco engineers and the citizens of Multan.
During a presentation at the inauguration of a planning and engineering computer centre at the Mepco office on Thursday, USAID officials projected a map which showed Azad Jammu and Kashmir as an area separate from Pakistan, and did not show Indian-administered Kashmir at all.
A similar map was displayed on USAID banners set up for the event.
Seventh university bill draft ready
ISLAMABAD: If passed, it would be the seventh university bill rushed through the Pakistani parliament in the past month. Bills on Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Medical University, South Asian Strategic Institute University, Darul Madina International University, My University, Capital University for Science and Technology, and the Capital University have already been pushed through.
The National Assembly standing committee on Capital Administration and Development approved the draft of National Institute of Science and Technical Education Bill 2012 yesterday after introducing a few amendments.
The amendments were introduced to the original draft — which is aimed at constituting and restructuring the status of National Institute of Science and Technical Education (NISTE) Islamabad as a degree awarding institute — to comply with the demands of NISTE employees.
Pakistan regulates directorship
ISLAMABAD: The chairman of the Securities Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), Muhammad Ali, has said no person will be able to become board of directors member of more than five companies simultaneously after the introduction of new corporate governance rules.
He was speaking on the occasion of issuing a communiqué for new corporate governance rules for public sector companies. He said a system of internal audit will be introduced in all the public sector companies.
Finance Minister Salim Mandviwala said the performance of the public sector companies hasimproved after introduction of new corporate governance rules.
He said on the recommendations of the Cabinet Committee for Restructuring, an independent and autonomous board of directors had been appointed in most of the national institutions.
