TOKYO: Chinese government ships were in the territorial waters of disputed Tokyo-controlled islands yesterday, Japan’s coastguard said. The three surveillance ships were navigating in the 12-nautical-mile limit around the Senkakus, which Beijing claims and calls the Diaoyus, at around 10am, the coastguard said. Chinese government ships have frequently spent time around the disputed island chain since Tokyo nationalised three of the isles last September.
Pregnant wife burnt alive
KATHMANDU: Police have arrested a man in rural Nepal after he allegedly killed his 22-year-old pregnant wife by stuffing her into a hay bale and setting it alight, an officer said yesterday. “We received a call from the husband that the woman had gone missing, but when our officers arrived on the scene they saw the body and were suspicious,” Morang police superintendent, Niraj Jha, said. He said that the man was arrested on suspicion of murder and would be presented in a local court later yesterday. Maina Bardewa Bhitrikoti, who was four-months pregnant, sustained more than 50 percent burns.
Driver killed in Bangla strike
DHAKA: A truck driver died in a northern Bangladesh city yesterday as clashes erupted during a nationwide strike called by the opposition to protest against the arrests of their senior leaders. Police said the 35-year-old driver was hit by rocks thrown by opposition activists in Bogra when he was driving a cargo-laden truck in defiance of a 36-hour strike by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies.
Moderate quake hits Java
Jakarta: A 5.6-magnitude quake jolted Java, the US Geological Survey said. The epicentre, with a depth of 46.7km, was initially determined to be at 7.1508 degrees south latitude and 106.0700 degrees east longitude. There were no reports of damage or injuries. AGENCIES
