DOHA: The Supreme Council of Health (SCH) has announced free medical tests for low-income workers today to mark the “World Day for Safety and Health in Workplace”.

The Day actually fell on April 28 but is being observed today.

The SCH is also organising lectures today to make workers aware of risks at worksites and how to prevent them from falls, heat stress and infectious diseases,” said Dr Sheikh Mohammad bin Hamad Al Thani, Head of Public Health Department at SCH.

He was addressing a press conference held here on Wednesday to announce the programs of the SCH on the occasion of the “World Day for Safety and Health in Workplace”.

The SCH plans to launch a national safety and health campaign at worksites by the end of this year, said Al Thani.

The programme aims to prevent workers from back and joint pain caused by workload or due to sitting for a long time in the office, he added.

The SCH will also launch inspection drive at worksite to ensure that companies are strictly following the regulations about the summer work timing when the cases of heat exhaustion increase, he added.

“The health safety campaign also aims to record the cases of heat stress that are taken for emergency medical care during the summer months,” said Dr Sheikha Al Annud bint Mohammad Al Thani, Head of the Health Promotion and Non-Communicable Diseases Department.

Heat stress kills two million workers every year, she added.
