Doha: Qatar Charity (QC) organised a ceremony to honour 28 young Qataris who participated in the ‘Competitors 2’ contest. The contest raised QR12m for projects for Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries.
The ceremony was attended by QC CEO, Yusuf bin Ahmed Al Kuwari, sponsors, beneficiaries of the competition and QC officials.
“My thanks go to the young Qataris who answered a call to conscience towards the Syrians, giving up their time and travelling to refugee camps where they were briefed on the circumstances of the refugees before going on to collect donations for them,” Al Kuwari said.
“Their success has exceeded all expectations and, thanks to God, we were able to collect more than double our target of QR4.5m, raising QR12m,” he added.
The event was held to recognise efforts of the young people who travelled great distances to witness first-hand the conditions of refugees before returning home to collect donations for them during the duration of the contest which lasted one and a half months, returning to Jordan for a second time to begin implementation of the first set of projects at a cost of QR2.5m.
First place went to Talal Al Kuwari, second to Fatima Al Emadi and third to Asma Al Kaabi.
The contest was sponsored by Ooredoo, Qatar Stars League and the media who covered the competition’s events.
The projects made possible by the funds were for Syrian refugees in Jordan and cover shelter, food, productive families and education at a cost of around QR4.5m since April-end.
The contest aims to engage the community in charitable work through entertainment and competition, spreading the culture and values of charity work through media campaigns. It also seeks to highlight the technical ability reached in charitable and humanitarian work in general, and within QC in particular.
