BEIJING: A detained Chinese activist has managed to release a video from behind bars urging citizens to fight for their rights, in an act likely to further antagonise authorities.

Xu Zhiyong, who has been detained since mid-July, is among two dozen activists rounded up this year for criticising corruption and raising other sensitive issues.

“Let us come together and work to make the rights of citizens matter, the identities of citizens matter, and together push for democracy, rule of law, fairness and justice,” he said.

“We can surely build a free, public-spirited, loving and good China.”

Xinhua falls for Bezos spoof

BEIJING: China’s official news agency Xinhua has reported as true a satirical story that Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos bought the Washington Post newspaper by accident.

Bezos’ acquisition of the Washington institution for $250m was announced earlier this week. The original parody, entitled “Amazon Founder Says he Clicked on Washington Post By Mistake”, was written by comedian Andy Borowitz for his satirical Borowitz Report column, published by The New Yorker magazine on its website.
