Gaza City: Rania Murad, a Palestinian resident of Gaza City, is forced to feed her pet cats boiled lentils and canned peas as the dire humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip continues to worsen amid the ongoing Israeli blockade and acute shortages of food and medical supplies.

Rania, who hails from north Gaza, told photojournalist Majdi Fathi that initially, her cats used to subsist on canned meat items, but after they became harder to come by, she had to resort to feeding them canned peas.

“When those became even harder to come by we started feeding them whatever we cook. They eat lentils just like us,” she said.

On Sunday, five new deaths were recorded, including those of two children, as a result of starvation and malnutrition in the Gaza Strip, said the Qatar News Agency (QNA).

The total number of victims of famine and malnutrition rose to 217, including 100 children.

Since March 2, 2025, the Israeli occupation authorities have closed all crossings into Gaza, cutting off the entry of most food and medical aid, triggering a widespread famine throughout the besieged Strip.
