BANGKOK: Effective today, the Thai Government will impose the Internal Security Act (ISA) at some parts of three districts in Bangkok until October 18, ahead of a planned anti-government rally by the People’s Army Against Thaksin Regime group. The ISA was imposed as the rally was expected to be a long affair, affecting those residing near the Government House and Parliament, said National Security Council Chief Paradorn Pattanatabut.
Court agrees to Bo’s appeal
BEIJING: A court in eastern China yesterday allowed ousted senior politician Bo Xilai to appeal against a guilty verdict on charges of corruption and abuse of power handed out last month which earned him a life sentence. In a statement on its website, the high court in the eastern province of Shandong, where Bo was first tried, said it had allowed him to appeal. While Bo has the right to appeal, his sentence and the verdict are unlikely to be overturned as the courts are controlled by the ruling Communist Party which has pronounced him guilty.
Warrant issued for Misuari
MANILA: Fugitive Muslim leader Nur Misuari has been charged with rebellion following deadly attacks by hundreds of his armed followers on a southern Philippine city, the justice minister said yesterday. A court in the southern city of Zamboanga has issued an arrest warrant for Misuari and three of his commanders for the siege of the city that began on September 9, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima told reporters. At least 244 people were killed in the three weeks of fighting that followed, with the government alleging that Misuari masterminded the operation even though he was not physically present.
Manila opens seaport terminal
MANILA: The Manila North Harbour Port formally launched the passenger terminal of a new seaport that can accommodate two to three million passengers yearly. Port Chairman Michael Romero said the well-secured complex will “erase the image” of the old harbour long considered a haven for criminals. “The complex will provide passengers with an unforgettable experience and is the first of its kind in the Philippines,” he said.
